Des chercheurs de l&#8217;Institut N\u00e9el (CNRS\/Universit\u00e9 Grenoble Alpes), de l&#8217;Institut Femto-ST (CNRS\/Universit\u00e9 Bourgogne-Franche-Comt\u00e9), de l&#8217;Institut de la science des mat\u00e9riaux de Madrid (Espagne) et de l&#8217;Institut des mat\u00e9riaux de Trieste (Italie) ont d\u00e9couvert des sources de cytotoxicit\u00e9 pour des nanoparticules m\u00e9talliques. Pour comprendre et mod\u00e9liser le r\u00f4le de la surface des nanoparticules, ces chercheurs ont concentr\u00e9 leur \u00e9tude sur une surface de basse \u00e9nergie (particuli\u00e8rement stable) du cuivre interagissant avec une couche mol\u00e9culaire sous ultra-haut vide. Les observations de mol\u00e9cules individuelles, par microscopie \u00e0 effet tunnel, l&#8217;analyse \u00e0 haute r\u00e9solution de la composition de chaque mol\u00e9cule, et des calculs ab initio, ont r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 la fa\u00e7on dont se transforment progressivement les mol\u00e9cules. Le principal r\u00e9sultat d\u00e9montre que la surface de cuivre est le si\u00e8ge d&#8217;une r\u00e9action d&#8217;oxydo-r\u00e9duction tr\u00e8s particuli\u00e8re, dit &#8220;intramol\u00e9culaire&#8221; : les mol\u00e9cules de cat\u00e9chol voient leurs fonctions alcool oxyd\u00e9es alors que d&#8217;autres fonctions sont r\u00e9duites, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un transfert d&#8217;\u00e9lectrons entre les substituants d&#8217;une m\u00eame mol\u00e9cule.
